Installation Guide and Japanese Display Etiquette

The rack is intended for secure mounting on a vertical wall. There are mounting holes on the back of the side panels for hanging on screws or hooks. Traditional Japanese etiquette dictates that mounted swords (meaning in the scabbard, or saya, with the handle attached) must always be placed in the katanakake stand with the cutting edge facing upwards. This ensures that the sensitive, razor-sharp edge inside the scabbard does not rest against the wood and become dull. In times of peace, the handle (tsuka) should point to the left, symbolising that the weapon cannot be drawn immediately with the right hand and that your intentions are purely peaceful. The Historical Context of Weapon Presentation

Displaying swords has profound philosophical and aesthetic significance in Japanese history. For the samurai, the sword was not merely a tool for killing, but the very embodiment of his honour and soul (taima). Resting swords in special stands expressed absolute reverence for the blacksmith's masterpiece. While classic table stands were designed for one to three swords that the samurai kept at hand daily, large wall racks (similar to this one) found their place in larger armouries, dojos, or in the residences of high-ranking daimyo, where they served to clearly organise a vast arsenal of edged weapons.

Care for Stained Wood

The display rack is manufactured from solid wood, surface-treated with a dark stain. To ensure the stand retains its noble, semi-matte appearance over the long term and does not become a dust trap, it is advisable to wipe it regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Strictly avoid using wet rags or harsh chemical cleaners containing solvents. The occasional application of a thin layer of high-quality wood polish containing beeswax will nourish the wood and beautifully enhance its colour and grain structure.

Safe Mounting Guidelines

Because a fully loaded rack with eight steel swords represents a considerable weight (often exceeding 10 kilograms / 22 lbs), it is absolutely critical to ensure secure anchoring to the wall. Always use sufficiently long screws and wall plugs appropriate for your wall's material (brick, concrete, plasterboard). Position the holder so that no one can accidentally bump into it with their shoulder. It is of paramount importance to install the entire display strictly out of the reach of small children and pets to prevent swords from being accidentally pulled down, which could result in serious injury.
