Steel Frying Pan with Folding Handle, 19 cm

The Key to Perfect Camp Cooking

This hand-crafted pan is designed with a focus on functionality and historical authenticity. The pan itself has a diameter of 19 cm, an ideal size for preparing a meal for one or two people. The raised edge prevents grease or juices from spilling into the fire. However, its greatest advantage is the folding handle. It is attached to the pan with two sturdy rivets and is long enough in its working position for safe handling over a fire. The hollow, conical design of the handle also prevents it from overheating. Once you're done cooking and the pan has cooled, simply fold the handle over the pan to save precious space in your gear.

From the History of Frying Pans

Frying pans are among the oldest types of cookware, and their basic design has changed very little over the centuries. Even the ancient Romans used similar pans, which they called sartago. In the Middle Ages, iron pans were a common part of every kitchen, from simple households to army field kitchens. For soldiers, pilgrims, and travellers, compact and durable versions that could withstand the rigours of the road were especially valuable. With its simple and functional design, this pan is based on these historical examples, making it an excellent choice for any enthusiast of re-enactment and living history.

How to Care for Your Pan

To ensure your pan lasts for many years and develops a proper patina, you need to follow a few principles:

  • Before first use: The pan is coated with a protective oil from the factory. Wash it thoroughly with hot, soapy water and dry it. Then, you need to "season" it. Coat the inside with a thin layer of edible oil (e.g., flaxseed or sunflower oil) and heat it over a fire until the oil stops smoking. Let it cool, wipe off the excess oil, and you can repeat the process 2-3 times. This creates a natural non-stick surface.
  • After each use: Never let the pan soak in water. After cooking, wash it with hot water only (without soap, to avoid stripping the seasoning) and dry it immediately and completely. Then, lightly coat it with edible oil and store it in a dry place.
  • What to avoid: Never wash the pan in a dishwasher. Using harsh detergents and wire scourers can damage the protective layer.

Important Notice

This pan is made from carbon (mild) steel, which is prone to rust if not maintained properly. Following the care instructions above will ensure its longevity. The pan can be used over an open fire, a gas stove, and on a ceramic hob. However, it is NOT suitable for use on an induction hob!
