Roman Quilted Subarmalis Vest with Pteryges
The Key to Comfort Under Armour
This subarmalis is constructed from several layers of robust cotton canvas, which is vertically quilted. This padding effectively absorbs impacts and evenly distributes the weight of metal armour. It is equipped with side lacing, allowing you to get a perfect, adjustable fit, whether you wear it over a simple tunic or additional layers.
Design for the Roman Warrior
The most distinctive feature is the pteruges—a double layer of fabric strips at the shoulders and waist. These lappets not only create the iconic silhouette of a Roman soldier, as seen in historical depictions, but also practically protect the upper arms and thighs without restricting your mobility in combat. It is the ideal base for your costume as a legionary, centurion, gladiator, or any ancient warrior for LARP and SCA events. This is a quality branded product from Lord Of Battles®.
A Note from History: The Function of the Subarmalis
The subarmalis (known in Greek as the *thoracomachus*) was an essential piece of a legionary's kit. It was worn directly beneath metal armour (*lorica segmentata*, *hamata*, or *squamata*). Its primary function was to absorb the energy from blows (blunt force trauma) and to protect the body from the chafing and pinching from the edges of metal plates or rings. It was, in essence, the ancient gambeson. The *pteruges* also offered protection for the shoulders and groin, areas the armour often did not fully cover.
