Medieval Steel Buckler – Round Fist Shield with Grip | 14th–16th Century
A Steel Fortress in Your Fist
This buckler is based on authentic historical examples used by foot soldiers and duelists between the 14th and 16th centuries. Its construction is driven by maximum functionality. It is made from mild steel approx. 2 mm thick (14 gauge), giving it excellent resistance to deformation from strikes. The centre of the shield features a massive domed boss (umbo), which not only protects the knuckles of the shield hand but also serves for offensive actions – punching or deflecting the opponent's blade.
The rim of the shield is slightly flared and reinforced, increasing the structural strength of the entire disc while allowing for effective binding of the opponent's blade. You have a choice of two finishes: polished steel for those who want to shine on the battlefield, or a blackened version for a more subtle, raw look that also resists rust better.
On the back, you will find a sturdy handle. This consists of a steel frame with wooden cladding (depending on the version), ensuring a comfortable and secure grip even with a sweaty glove. The shield is excellently balanced, which you will appreciate during quick guard changes and dynamic fencing.

Historical Context and Usage
The buckler (from the Old French "bouclier") was a small but treacherous shield. Unlike large heraldic shields, it was not used for passive body coverage but for active defence. The fencer used it to protect their sword hand and to deflect the opponent's weapon, creating openings for their own attack. It was a popular weapon for civilian self-defence as well as for soldiers, especially archers and infantry.
An interesting fact is that the term "swashbuckler" comes from the noise these fighters made when they banged their sword against their own or their opponent's buckler ("swash" + "buckler").
Care and Maintenance
To keep your buckler looking like new for as long as possible:
- Wipe the steel and handle with a dry cloth after every training session to remove sweat and moisture.
- Regularly preserve the steel parts with oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil) to prevent rust.
- Store it in a dry place. If the handle gets wet, let it dry slowly at room temperature; never dry it near a direct heat source.
Safety Warning
This product is a replica of historical armour. Although it is made of high-quality 2 mm steel that can withstand rigorous training, it is not a certified protective device for modern full-contact sports (such as Buhurt/HMB) unless otherwise stated. Always prioritize your safety and that of your sparring partner when using it.
