Historical Context and Shield Usage

Round shields were heavily used on battlefields for centuries, from the early Middle Ages to the Renaissance. They served not only to deflect blows from swords, axes, or spears but, thanks to their shape, also to actively push opponents off balance. This particular shield, with its construction—held on the forearm using a strap and a solid handle—is reminiscent of Renaissance targets or infantry shields. Its universal shape makes it a great addition to the costume of a mercenary, town guard, or fantasy warrior. If you choose to keep the shield black, it perfectly complements darker characters. At the same time, it serves as a blank canvas for your own heraldic painting.

Construction and Safety Warnings

The shield is made of 18-gauge (approx. 1.2 mm) steel. The interior is equipped with a riveted steel handle for the palm and a sturdy, adjustable leather strap for fastening to the forearm. This setup ensures a secure and firm grip even in the heat of battle. Regarding safety and practical use, the shield is suitable for stage combat, SCA practice, or LARP battles.

Important Warning: Due to the material thickness and overall construction, this shield is not suitable for full-contact heavy combat, such as buhurt or Battle of the Nations (HMB). Strong blows with heavy steel weapons could irreversibly deform it, leading to a risk of injury. For maximum wearing comfort and to absorb potential shocks, we strongly recommend wearing a padded layer under the shield, such as a gambeson or at least thick leather bracers.

Maintenance for Preserving the Appearance

For the shield to serve you in perfect condition for as long as possible, it requires regular care. The steel parts—especially those on the inside or places where the black paint wears off—must be cleaned of sweat and moisture after each use and lightly coated with gun oil to prevent rust. Always store the shield in a dry environment. We recommend occasionally treating the leather straps with leather conditioner to ensure they retain their flexibility and do not crack.
