Design and Features
These arming chausses are crafted from heavy-duty cotton canvas, ensuring durability and breathability. The construction focuses on keeping the padding exactly where you need it.
- Adjustable Fit: The back of the leg features a full-length lacing system. This allows you to tighten the chausses for a snug, custom fit around your calves and thighs, ensuring maximum mobility.
- Secure Suspension: A robust leather tab with a pre-punched hole is attached to the top point. This is designed to be tied to your arming belt or C-belt, carrying the weight of the leg harness effectively.
- Stay-Put Stirrup: A fabric loop at the bottom goes under your foot, preventing the legs from riding up inside your greaves or boots during combat.
- Vertical Quilting: The longitudinal stitching prevents the internal padding from sagging and maintains a uniform thickness for consistent protection.

A Glimpse into History
Padded chausses became a staple of military equipment in the High Middle Ages. As mail chausses gave way to plate armour in the 14th century, the need for a dedicated padded under-layer became critical. They served two purposes: cushioning the body against the hard metal of the armour (preventing chafing) and absorbing the kinetic energy of blows that did not penetrate the steel. Historically, these were separate legs suspended from a belt, allowing for riding comfort that joined trousers could not offer.
Care and Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of your padded armour, please follow these instructions:
- Washing: Hand wash only in cold water. Do not machine wash, as the agitation may clump the internal padding.
- Drying: Dry flat on a rack. Do not wring or twist the fabric. Keep away from direct heat sources like radiators or open fires.
- Maintenance: Apply leather conditioner to the suspension tabs occasionally to prevent them from cracking.
Safety Warning
While these chausses offer significant padding, they are not intended as standalone armour for full-contact heavy combat (such as Buhurt or Battle of the Nations). They are designed as padding to be worn under armour or for light HEMA and theatre use.
