Leather Greaves Guardian of the Grove – Deep Green
Protection and Mobility in One
These greaves are a masterpiece combining durability with flexibility. The base is thick buffalo leather (approx. 3 mm / 1/8 inch), which is crafted into three separate plates. These plates overlap each other and are connected by sturdy rivets. This solution, inspired by natural structures (like an armadillo's shell or insect carapace), ensures that the armour adapts to the shape of the leg while walking and does not restrict your movement as much as a single rigid piece of leather would.
They stay firmly on the leg thanks to a system of adjustable leather straps and metal buckles located on the back of the calf. This makes the greaves one size fits most and they can be easily adjusted to fit thinner or thicker calves, whether worn over trousers or high boots. The deep green dyeing of the leather is penetrating, giving the armour an authentic, "earthy" look.

Historical and Fantasy Context
Shin protection (cnemides) was historically more common among heavy infantry (e.g., Greek hoplites) who used bronze. However, in fantasy literature and games, fleet-footed elves and rangers prefer leather for its silence and lightness. The green colour here serves as camouflage in the forest environment. The segmented (laminar) construction is historically documented more in later types of armour, but in the fantasy world, it represents the ideal compromise between protection and mobility needed for fighting in difficult terrain.
Please keep in mind that this is costume armour designed for LARP and theatre. While leather cushions blows, the greaves are not certified as protective gear for full-contact combat with steel weapons (such as Buhurt) and do not guarantee protection against injury in such extreme use.
Leather Armour Care
Leather is a natural material that requires care to serve you well for a long time:
- After each wear, clean mud and dust from the greaves with a damp cloth and let them air dry (never near a heater).
- Regularly use leather balm or beeswax to prevent the leather from cracking and to keep it supple.
- Keep the metal buckles dry to prevent rusting.
Your costume will look absolutely perfect if you complement these greaves with matching leather vambraces in the same design and colour.
