Roman Steel Greaves Centurion – Leg Protection from Trajan’s Column

Step back into the glory days of the Roman Empire, when legions led by Emperor Trajan marched against Dacian warriors. These precisely crafted greaves (Latin: ocreae) are a faithful replica of the protective armour depicted on the famous reliefs of Trajan's Column in Rome. They are designed to protect an infantryman's most valuable asset – mobility. The shin and knee are critical areas; an injury there often meant doom in ancient battle. Whether you are a re-enactor portraying a Centurion or a LARP warrior seeking reliable defence, these steel guards provide not only safety but also the unmistakable look of an ancient soldier. Roman Steel Greaves Centurion – Leg Protection from Trajan’s Column

Construction and Usage

The greaves are made from 1.2 mm thick mild steel (approx. 18 gauge), offering an ideal balance between durability and weight. A key feature is the articulated knee cop (poleyn), attached to the shin guard with a hinge. This design ensures that the armour follows your leg's movement when walking, running, or kneeling, without hindering you. The interior is painted to provide better protection against rust.

Fastening to the leg is achieved in a historically accurate and practical manner. Sturdy leather thongs are threaded through brass loops, allowing you to tighten the greaves exactly as needed. This ensures a custom fit whether you wear them over trousers or authentic woollen wrappings.

Historical Context

In the Roman Republic, greaves were often worn only by hastati and principes on the left (leading) leg. However, during the Imperial period, especially during the Dacian Wars (early 2nd century AD), the need for leg protection increased due to a weapon called the falx – a Dacian two-handed scythe-like sword capable of reaching around a shield to sever a limb. Armour similar to this became standard for specialized units and officers (Centurions) who led from the front lines.

Care and Maintenance

To keep your steel greaves looking new and free of rust, proper care is required:

  • Wipe the armour dry after every use to remove sweat and moisture.
  • Regularly coat the surface with oil (e.g., WD-40, mineral oil, or gun oil) to prevent oxidation.
  • Treat the leather ties occasionally with beeswax or leather balm to prevent cracking.
  • Store in a dry place.

Safety Warning

This product is a historical replica intended for re-enactment, stage combat, LARP, and costume purposes. The 1.2 mm steel thickness is not suitable for full-contact medieval combat (buhurt, HMB, Battle of the Nations), where there is a risk of metal deformation and injury to the wearer. For comfort, we strongly recommend wearing a padded layer (padded chausses or thick woollen wraps) underneath the greaves to prevent chafing and bruising.

A Roman tunic and authentic leather caligae (sandals) go perfectly with these greaves to complete your legionary appearance.
