Loose Brass Chainmail Rings – Flat Ring Round Rivets – 8 mm – Pack of 100

Usage and Assembly

These rings feature a "Flat Ring / Round Rivet" construction. This provides a broader surface area for a denser weave compared to round wire rings, and the round rivet ensures a secure, historically accurate closure. They are significantly stronger than simple butted rings.

How to use:

  • Integrate the ring into your mesh pattern (e.g., 4-in-1).
  • Insert the provided brass rivet into the pre-punched hole in the ring's overlap.
  • Use chainmail riveting pliers (not included) to compress the rivet, securing the ring permanently.

Please Note: Brass is softer than steel. While durable, we recommend these rings primarily for LARP, stage combat, costume making, or as decorative edging on steel armor, rather than for full-contact heavy combat (Buhurt).

Historical Context

In the Middle Ages, full brass mail was rare due to the metal's softness compared to iron. However, it was extensively used for decorative trim. Known as "latten" edges, rows of brass rings were woven into the hems of hauberks, sleeves, and aventails. This golden contrast against the grey steel was a striking visual indicator of a knight's or noble's status.

Care Instructions

Brass naturally oxidizes over time, developing a patina. To keep your rings looking their best:

  • Storage: Keep in a dry environment. Moisture accelerates tarnishing.
  • Polishing: If you prefer a bright, gold-like shine, polish lightly with a soft cloth and a brass cleaner.
  • Reactivity: Be aware that brass can react with sweat, potentially leaving dark marks on skin or light clothing if worn directly against the body.
