Adjustable Leather Back Harness for Sword and Scabbard
Hollywood Myth versus Historical Reality
As a historian and swordsman, I must share a little secret with you. Carrying a longsword on the back is known primarily from popular fantasy sagas and the silver screen. In reality, smoothly drawing a long blade from a full back scabbard is anatomically almost impossible, simply because the human arm is not long enough. Historically, swords were rarely carried on the back, and when they were, it was exclusively for transport—for example, during long marches, making one's way through dense forests, or climbing, when a warrior absolutely needed both hands free. For the purposes of LARP, cosplay, and fantasy reenactment, however, this back harness is an absolute must-have that will imprint an unmistakable heroic character onto your outfit.
Construction and Proper Attachment
This suspension system is precisely crafted from honest, genuine cowhide leather and is fitted with reliable metal buckles. The system is not attached to the bare blade; instead, you fasten it directly onto your sword's scabbard using the adjustable cinch straps. Thanks to the variability of the buckles, the strap can be adjusted to a certain extent to fit different scabbard diameters and shapes. The diagonal positioning of the main load-bearing strap across the chest and back excellently distributes the weapon's weight, which you will particularly appreciate when carrying heavier two-handed or longswords.
Caring for Leather Gear
To ensure this harness serves you reliably for many seasons and the leather does not start to dry out or crack, I recommend regularly treating it with a high-quality leather balm containing beeswax. If you get caught in heavy rain during a LARP battle, let the leather dry naturally at standard room temperature. Never dry wet leather accessories on a hot radiator or near an open flame—the leather would irreversibly harden and lose its natural flexibility. Please note that the sword, scabbard, mail shirt, and other accessories shown in the illustrative photos are not included in the delivery.
