Medieval Steel Buckler – 16 Gauge Mild Steel, 30 cm Diameter

Active Defense for Sword Masters

This buckler is forged from durable 16-gauge mild steel (approx. 1.6 mm), giving it the ideal balance between low weight and high durability. With a diameter of 30 cm (11.8 inches), it is large enough to protect your hand and forearm, yet compact enough for rapid manoeuvrability.

The centerpiece of the shield is the deep boss (umbo), which provides generous space for your fist (depth 7 cm / 2.7 inches), so you can hold the shield comfortably even while wearing a padded fencing glove. The rim of the shield is carefully rolled. This is a key detail—not only does it increase the structural strength of the shield, but most importantly, it saves the edge of both your sword and your opponent's sword upon contact. The handle is made of a sturdy steel strip that is riveted to the body, ensuring maximum reliability.

Historical Context

Combined with a sword, the buckler was one of the most common civilian weapons of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. The famous I.33 manuscript (the oldest surviving European fencing manual from around 1300) is entirely dedicated to sword and buckler combat. Unlike large shields that were held close to the body, the buckler is held in an extended arm (the so-called "extended ward"), protecting the fencer more by actively intercepting and deflecting the opponent's blade than by passively covering the body. It was often used as a striking weapon as well—a blow with the steel rim or boss to the face could end a duel before it truly began.

Care and Maintenance

Since the buckler is made of mild steel (not stainless), it requires care to prevent rust.

  • After every use: Wipe the shield dry with a cloth to remove sweat and moisture.
  • Preservation: Regularly apply a thin layer of preservation oil (e.g., WD-40 or gun oil).
  • Storage: Store the shield in a dry place.
  • Grip: Because the handle is steel, it may become slippery in a sweaty palm. We recommend wrapping the handle with leather or using leather gloves for a more secure grip.

Safety Warning

Although the shield is robust, it is considered Class C according to the classification of fencing weapons, product without warranty! Exercise caution during combat training. A strike with the edge of a metal shield can cause serious injuries. Always use adequate protective gear.
