Historical Purpose and Shape of Crossbow Bolts
During the High Middle Ages, the crossbow was an absolutely devastating weapon on the battlefield, the penetrating power of which terrified even heavily armoured cavalrymen. The projectiles designed for crossbows are traditionally called bolts or quarrels, and they differ fundamentally from classic archery arrows at first glance. Due to the immense kinetic energy generated by the stiff prod (bow), bolts had to be significantly shorter, thicker, and overall more massive. Our decorative bolt faithfully replicates this historical design. For instance, its shaft lacks the typical deep nock (the notch for catching the bowstring). The rear end of the bolt is flat because, historically, the projectile was placed into the crossbow's guiding groove (tiller), and the string rested directly against its flat rear surface.

The bolt is in no way intended for sport shooting from fully functional crossbows.
