Historical Purpose and Anatomy of Crossbow Quarrels
During the High Middle Ages, the crossbow became a fearsome weapon, capable of threatening even heavily armoured knights thanks to its immense penetrating power. The ammunition for crossbows, commonly referred to as bolts or quarrels, differed significantly from standard archery arrows in both appearance and construction. Bolts had to be noticeably shorter, thicker, and heavier to transmit the massive kinetic energy generated by the stiff prod (bow) without buckling. Our decorative replica faithfully honours this specific shape. The shaft does not feature a deep nock at its rear end for the bowstring (unlike bow arrows); instead, it is flat, because the bolt was placed into the crossbow's guiding groove (tiller) and the string rested directly against its flat end.

How to Care for Natural Materials
Since the bolt is made of genuine wood and natural bird feathers, it requires a dry environment to maintain its pristine appearance. Do not expose it to prolonged humidity or rain to prevent the wooden shaft from swelling and warping, or the feathers from matting and sticking together. To remove dust from the grooves and fletching, a very soft feather duster or a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush will serve you best.
