Solid Double Hook with Decorative Finials

Each solid cast-iron wall hook features two gracefully curved arms of different lengths. The taller upper coat hook is suitable for jackets, coats, hats and bags, whilst the shorter lower arm provides additional space for scarves, towels, lighter clothing and small accessories.

Both arms end in rounded finials decorated with raised grooves. A pronounced ridge running along each curved arm emphasises the outline and recalls ornamental household ironmongery of the nineteenth century. The shaped mounting plate contains two fixing holes, allowing the hook to be secured to timber or correctly prepared masonry.

The rustic black finish highlights the textured surface of the casting and gives the hooks the appearance of aged period hardware. Their restrained colour makes them suitable for Victorian, colonial, farmhouse, retro and industrial-style interiors.

Inspired by Victorian Household Ironmongery

The design is inspired by decorative domestic fittings associated with the Victorian era of the nineteenth century, approximately 1837–1901. It is not presented as an exact copy of one particular museum artefact. Instead, it combines recognisable period features such as sweeping curves, raised ornament, black metalwork and the Victorian preference for turning practical household objects into decorative furnishings.

Industrial casting methods allowed ornamental cast-iron items to be produced in reusable moulds and sold more widely during the nineteenth century. Brackets, door furniture, coat hooks and other useful fittings consequently became common features of middle-class homes. Entrance halls were furnished with hooks and hall stands on which visitors and residents could leave coats, walking sticks, gentlemen’s hats and umbrellas.

Practical Uses Around the Home

• Hallway: hang coats, jackets, hats, scarves and everyday bags.
• Bedroom or dressing room: organise dressing gowns, clothing, belts and accessories.
• Bathroom: hold towels and light textiles where the hook will not be continually exposed to running water.
• Study or workshop: store a satchel, headphones or a lightweight apron.
• Country house or cottage: add rustic ironmongery to timber walls, doors or furniture.
• Hotel, inn or restaurant: arrange several hooks in a row to create a characterful wall-mounted coat rack.

How to Install the Coat Hooks

• 1. Select a flat position where the projecting arms will not obstruct a doorway or narrow passage.
• 2. Hold the mounting plate against the surface and mark the centres of both fixing holes with a pencil.
• 3. When fixing to timber, drill narrow pilot holes slightly smaller than the screw shanks. This helps prevent the timber from splitting.
• 4. For masonry, use suitable wall plugs and fixings selected for the particular wall material. Wall plugs are not included.
• 5. Tighten both screws evenly. Do not overtighten them, as excessive force may damage the cast-iron plate or the mounting surface.
• 6. Before hanging any items, check that the plate sits firmly against the surface and does not move.

Care Instructions

Remove dust and everyday marks with a soft, dry cloth. For more persistent dirt, use a slightly damp cloth and dry the surface immediately afterwards. Do not clean the hooks with wire brushes, abrasive pads, harsh chemicals or chemical rust removers, as these may damage the black surface finish.

When the hooks are installed in a humid room, inspect them periodically for signs of corrosion. Do not leave the cast iron wet for prolonged periods or position the hooks where water will regularly run directly over them.

Safe Use

• The actual load capacity depends on the wall material, the selected fixings and the quality of installation.
• Do not use the hooks as handrails, steps, climbing aids or supports when standing up.
• Never hang people, very heavy tools or hazardous objects from the hooks.
• Check the screws and mounting surface regularly to ensure that the hooks remain secure.
• Do not install the projecting arms at head height or directly within a narrow walkway.
• Use purpose-made hollow-wall anchors when installing the hooks on plasterboard.

Recommended Accessories

To create a coordinated nineteenth-century-style hallway, mount the two hooks on a substantial oak rail or a dark-stained timber board. They work particularly well alongside cast-iron shelf brackets, black door furniture, a period-inspired umbrella stand, a wooden bench or a decorative hall mirror. For masonry installation, select good-quality wall plugs suited to the construction of the wall.
