Genuine Horn Powder Horn with Engraving and Leather Strap – 18th Century Style

Description and Features

Constructed from real polished ox horn, this powder horn features delicate engravings of foliage and star-like patterns, highlighted in white to mimic traditional scrimshaw techniques used by sailors and frontiersmen. The wide end of the horn is sealed with a fitted wooden plug, secured with small pins. The pouring spout is closed with a hand-carved wooden stopper that fits snugly to keep the contents secure.

Included is a long, genuine leather strap attached to both ends of the horn. This allows you to wear it comfortably across your body or over your shoulder, keeping it accessible for reloading drills or simply for looking the part. Because this is a natural product, please expect variations in colour (ranging from honey-yellow to deep black), curvature, and size.

Historical Context

In the age of muzzleloaders and flintlocks, keeping gunpowder dry was critical. Horn was the superior material for carrying powder for two main reasons: it is naturally waterproof, protecting the volatile black powder from rain and humidity, and it is non-sparking. Unlike metal flasks, a horn would not create a spark if it struck a buckle or a barrel, preventing accidental explosions. Used by everyone from Redcoats to American pioneers, these horns were often personalized by their owners with carvings of maps, names, or decorative patterns during long evenings by the campfire.

Care Instructions

To keep your powder horn in top condition, treat it as the natural material it is:

  • Storage: Store in a cool, dry place. Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight or near heat sources (like radiators), which can cause the horn to crack.
  • Cleaning: Wipe gently with a soft, damp cloth. Do not submerge in water.
  • Maintenance: Occasionally polish the horn with a little mineral oil or beeswax to maintain its luster and prevent it from drying out.

Safety and Usage Warning

This item is not food safe. Unlike our drinking horns, the interior of this powder horn is not treated with food-safe varnish. Do not use it for drinking! It is designed strictly as a historical prop, for display purposes, or for the storage of dry, non-consumable materials.
