A Glimpse into History
Pockets in the modern sense (sewn into clothing) were rare in the Middle Ages. Most people, men and women alike, carried their personal belongings in belt pouches (sometimes called kidney bags, although they were worn more on the hip) or in hanging bags. These pouches were used to store coins, a small knife, a fire-starter, amulets, or even small relics. The owner's wealth was often reflected in the pouch's adornment – in the quality of the leather and, especially, in the craftsmanship of the fittings and buckles. How to Care for Your Pouch
