Long before the appearance of complex plate gauntlets, chainmail mittens, also known as mufflers, were the standard form of hand armour. They were often attached directly to the sleeves of the chainmail shirt (hauberk). Their simple but effective design provided excellent protection against cutting blows. Evidence of their use can be found in many historical depictions, including the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which documents the Norman conquest of England in 1066.
