Antique Roman Brass Praetorian Guard Greaves with Articulated Knee Cops

Intricate Design and Ancient Symbolism

These highly detailed Roman shin guards are manufactured from sheet brass. To prevent unwanted reflections and protect the metal from corrosive sweat, the inside of the armour is blackened. A highly practical feature is the articulated knee cops, which are joined to the main greaves by sturdy hinges. This intelligent design guarantees excellent mobility, whether you are marching or standing in a combat stance. The greaves are lined with three brass eyelets on each side, through which the provided square leather laces are threaded. Thanks to this lacing system, you can easily adjust the armour to perfectly fit the shape of your calves.

The most striking feature is undoubtedly the breathtaking surface embossing. While both knee cops proudly display the Roman eagle (Aquila), the shin sections themselves are asymmetrical. One greave is intricately decorated with a fully armed guardsman surrounded by serpentine creatures. The other greave portrays the mythical hero Hercules, also framed by snake motifs. This asymmetry adds a profound layer of historical authenticity and mysticism to the entire set.

The Legacy of the Elite Praetorians

The Praetorian Guard was originally formed around the 3rd century BC as a dedicated protection force for the generals of the Roman Republic. During the era of the Roman Empire, this hand-picked unit evolved into the Emperor's personal bodyguard. The Praetorians held a unique and powerful privilege: they were the only armed soldiers permitted within the sacred walls of Rome itself. They enjoyed significantly higher pay and shorter terms of service compared to ordinary legionaries. Over the centuries, their political power grew to the point where they frequently decided who would sit on the imperial throne, until the Guard was finally disbanded in the 4th century AD by Emperor Constantine the Great.

Safe Usage and Proper Maintenance

We must advise you that this is light plate armour designed primarily for costume purposes, LARP, theatrical performances, and light stage fencing. This armour is strictly not suitable for heavy full-contact combat, such as buhurt, Historical Medieval Battle (HMB), or Battle of the Nations events. Heavy blows from blunt weapons would permanently deform the brass sheet and could result in severe injury to your legs.

To keep the brass looking radiant and beautiful, regular care is essential. Brass naturally oxidises when exposed to air, developing a darker patina. To maintain its golden shine, we recommend polishing the surface regularly with a quality metal polish and subsequently treating the armour with a light coat of mineral oil. The square leather laces should occasionally be treated with a leather balm to prevent them from drying out and snapping.

Recommended Accessories

For comfortable wear and to protect your shins from chafing and pressure points, we highly recommend purchasing high-quality padded chausses, leg wraps (wintegas), or at least thick historical trousers from our selection to wear underneath these metal greaves.
