Antique Spartan Mild Steel Greaves with Brass Finish
History Comes Alive on Your Legs
In ancient Greece, greaves—known historically as knemides—formed the absolute and necessary foundation of every heavy infantryman's protective armour. Their main purpose was to protect the vulnerable front part of the leg from the knee down to the instep, exactly the areas that the large circular shield (hoplon) could not fully cover. While historical originals were most often hammered from bronze plates and anatomically shaped directly to the wearer's leg, our replica uses more modern mild steel treated with a brass patina. This surface finish gives the armour an authentic, battle-worn look that is perfectly suited not only for ancient outfits but also for fantasy, gladiator, or even early medieval and Viking ensembles.
How to Wear and Use Your Greaves
The armour is securely and comfortably fastened to your leg using a system of sturdy leather straps, allowing you to adjust the fit exactly to the shape of your calf. Although the shape of the armour itself is adapted to human anatomy, wearing metal directly against bare skin or thin fabric is quite uncomfortable. For your maximum comfort and to prevent the formation of unpleasant bruises or chafing, we strongly recommend wearing a suitable cushioning underlayer beneath the greaves. The ideal choice is thick padded chausses (leg padding) or historical woollen leg wraps.
Safety Warning: Please bear in mind that this is primarily decorative and costume armour intended for light stage combat, LARP, and standard reenactment. This armour is not designed as protective gear for heavy, full-contact combat sports such as Buhurt, HMB, or Battle of the Nations. Receiving extreme blows from heavy weapons could cause the plates to deform and result in serious injury to you.
Maintenance of Mild Steel
To ensure these beautiful greaves last you as long as possible in pristine condition, they require a bit of care. The base material is mild steel, which is prone to rusting. After every event, especially if you have sweated or the armour has gotten wet, carefully wipe it down with a dry cloth first. Subsequently, treat both the inner and outer steel surfaces with a thin layer of high-quality gun oil or preservation oil. Always store the armour in a dry and well-ventilated environment.
To create a complete and breathtaking ancient ensemble, we highly recommend pairing these greaves with a replica of a Corinthian helmet, a Greek xiphos short sword, and a tunic from our extensive range.
