Blackbeard's Pirate Spyglass – Brass & Leather in Wooden Chest

Style and Use

This extendable spyglass is a faithful replica of historical pocket telescopes, which were essential gear for every officer and privateer. The combination of golden brass and dark leather looks both luxurious and practical. To focus, simply extend the telescope fully and then gently slide the last (smallest) segment in or out to fine-tune the image.

A Note on Optical Performance

It is important to state that this product is primarily a decorative replica or stage prop. Although the spyglass is functional (it contains lenses and magnifies), its optical system is structurally very simple, corresponding to the historical prototype and the affordable price point. It cannot be compared to modern optical instruments (binoculars) from renowned manufacturers that feature ground lenses and anti-reflective coatings. The spyglass tends to focus better at shorter distances, and the image in the distance may not be perfectly sharp. This is, unfortunately, a common characteristic of this category of costume accessories, not a manufacturing defect of the specific item.

To ensure the spyglass fits perfectly in your hand or waistcoat pocket, we offer it in two sizes. Both are supplied with a protective wooden box.

Historical Window: The Eyes of the Ship

Although we inextricably link the spyglass with pirates roaming the Caribbean, its history begins in the Netherlands in the early 17th century. It was precisely this instrument that decided life and death in the age of sail. In the so-called Golden Age of Piracy (approx. 1650–1730), it allowed captains to identify flags on the horizon before it was too late. An experienced sailor could estimate from the silhouette of the sails and the ship's draft whether a fat merchant prize or a heavily armed Royal Navy frigate was approaching.

Caring for Your Treasure

This spyglass is made from materials that age gracefully but require basic maintenance to serve you well for a long time:

  • Brass: Will acquire a natural patina over time. If you prefer a high shine, use a polish designed for brass and a soft cloth.
  • Leather: Protect the leather wrapping from excessive moisture and water. If you get wet at a LARP battle, let the spyglass dry naturally at room temperature.
  • Optics: Clean the glass lenses only when necessary with a special microfibre cloth (for glasses) to prevent scratching.

Important Safety Warnings

WARNING: Never look directly at the sun or near it with this spyglass! There is a risk of immediate and permanent eye damage or even blindness. The product is intended for persons over 15 years of age. Keep out of reach of small children as it contains small parts and glass.
