Steel Chainmail Skirt (Riveted Round / Solid Flat Rings Ø 9mm) with Belt

This chainmail skirt is an indispensable addition to your knightly or warrior kit, whether you're preparing for historical reenactment, a grand LARP battle, or a tournament of valour. It offers you reliable protection for your thighs and hips – critical areas that often remain vulnerable – all without restricting your mobility and combat manoeuvres. Thanks to the included padded and quilted belt, you can easily adjust it to your figure and securely attach it to other parts of your armour, creating a complete and functional protective ensemble. Step into the arena knowing you are shielded by tradition and craftsmanship!

Historical Use

Chainmail armour, whether in the form of full hauberks, their extended sections, or separate skirts, formed a cornerstone of protection for the medieval warrior for centuries. Chainmail skirts specifically served to protect the thighs, hips, and lower abdomen – areas that plate armour might not always fully cover, or where greater flexibility was required for combat on foot and horseback. Although the roots of mail protection extend deep into antiquity, as a supplement to developing plate armour, they retained their importance even in the High and Late Middle Ages, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries, when they helped to cover gaps in plate defences.

Advantages of the Material and Riveting

The skirt is crafted from mild steel, with the rings having a wire thickness of 1.024 mm (18 gauge). This material thickness provides an optimal balance between high puncture resistance and a reasonable weight that doesn't hinder movement. The traditional and highly effective construction method used involves alternating rows of round rings (each individually secured with a dome-headed rivet) with rows of solid flat rings punched from sheet metal. This technique, sometimes referred to as the 'Roman pattern' or more specifically as RRR/FRS (Round Ring Riveted / Flat Ring Solid), is exceptionally strong. The riveted connections prevent the rings from separating even under forceful blows or cuts, while the solid flat rings increase the overall integrity, density, and protective surface of the armour. Each skirt is the result of demanding handwork by experienced artisans, guaranteeing not only historical authenticity but, above all, high quality and reliability in "battle."

A Piece of History

Did you know that in its time, chainmail armour was a symbol of status and wealth? Not every warrior could afford a full mail hauberk. Its production was extremely time-consuming – weaving and riveting thousands of individual rings could take months. Therefore, high-quality chainmail was highly prized, often passed down as a valuable heirloom from father to son, and its loss in battle was a significant blow to the owner, not just militarily but also financially.

How to Care for Your Chainmail Skirt

As the skirt is made of mild steel that is only lightly oiled for basic rust protection, it requires regular care. Only then will it serve you long and reliably without excessively soiling you:

  • Before first use and after each use: We recommend lightly wiping the surface of the skirt with a dry, clean cloth to remove any excess preservative oil or dirt.
  • Wearing: Always wear a suitable undergarment beneath the chainmail skirt, ideally a gambeson or padded chausses. This layer not only increases your comfort and distributes the weight of the armour but also protects your civilian clothing and skin from abrasion and soiling.
  • After each use: If the skirt has become damp (from rain or sweat), it is essential to dry it thoroughly as soon as possible to prevent rust.
  • Regular Maintenance: Regularly inspect the condition of the rings and rivets. You can use a stiff brush to remove minor dirt and incipient rust. For long-term protection, regularly apply a thin layer of preservative oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or another mineral or silicone oil).
  • Storage: Store the skirt in a dry and well-ventilated place. Ideally, hang it on a suitable stand or hanger to allow air to circulate and prevent moisture accumulation. Never store it long-term in damp packaging.
