Splinted Leg Harness – 14th Century Brigandine Armour
Design and Functionality
This leg harness is crafted using the brigandine or splinted construction method. It features a foundation of genuine leather (approx. 3–3.2 mm thick) reinforced with vertical strips of 16 gauge (approx. 1.5 mm) mild steel. This design ensures flexibility while providing a rigid barrier against impact.
The set includes three integrated components for full leg coverage:
- Cuisses: Splinted protection for the thighs.
- Poleyns: Solid steel knee cops with side wings to protect the joint and ligaments.
- Greaves: Splinted shin protection.
The armour is secured to the leg using adjustable leather straps and buckles. For the best fit and weight distribution, the top of the cuisses should be pointed (laced) to an arming doublet or a specialized belt (l'artison). We highly recommend wearing padded chausses (gambeson legs) underneath for comfort and impact absorption.
Historical Context
Splinted armour was a staple of medieval warfare, particularly during the transition period of the 14th century. Before the full plate armour of the 15th century became standard for the wealthy, splinted limbs offered an excellent compromise. They were lighter and easier to manufacture than full plate, yet offered significantly better protection than mail alone. This style is famously associated with the finds from the Battle of Visby (1361) and was worn by professional soldiers and knights alike.
Safety Warning: While constructed from 1.5 mm steel, this item is a replica intended for historical fencing (HEMA), stage combat, LARP, and re-enactment. It is not classified as protective armour suitable for full-contact heavy steel fighting (Buhurt / Battle of the Nations).

Care and Maintenance
To ensure the longevity of your armour, please follow these care instructions:
- Steel: The product is shipped with a protective oil coating to prevent rust. Wipe this off before first use. Always clean and dry the metal after use, and re-apply a thin layer of oil (or microcrystalline wax) to prevent corrosion during storage.
- Leather: Keep the leather flexible by occasionally treating it with quality leather conditioner or beeswax. Avoid storing the armour in damp environments to prevent mould and rust.
