Italian Kettle Hat, 15th Century, 1.2 mm Steel
Design and Details
This medieval helmet is carefully handcrafted from 1.2 mm (18 gauge) mild steel. The hemispherical bowl is reinforced down the centre with a prominent ridge, which not only looks great but, more importantly, increases the helmet's resistance to blows from above. The wide, gently sloping brim effectively protects the face, neck, and shoulders from cuts, falling arrows, and bad weather. The interior of the helmet is fitted with a comfortable and fully adjustable leather suspension liner, ensuring a secure and snug fit. A sturdy leather chin strap, which fastens with a historically accurate brass buckle, enhances stability when worn.
How Can You Use This Helmet?
This kettle hat is an excellent and versatile accessory for:
- Re-enactment and historical fencing: Ideal for portraying 14th and 15th-century infantry.
- LARP and costume events: Perfectly complements your costume as a mercenary, city guard, or adventurer.
- Theatre and film: An authentic look for any historical scene.
- Decoration: An impressive display piece for your study, living room, or club house.
Important notice: Although the helmet is made of steel and offers a degree of protection, it is not certified protective equipment. It is not designed or tested for modern full-contact sports such as buhurt, HMB (Historical Medieval Battle), or the Battle of the Nations. Its purpose is primarily visual effect and light-contact combat.

A Point of History
Did you know that the design of this medieval helmet inspired engineers more than 400 years later? The British Brodie Mk I helmet, introduced in 1915 and used by British, Canadian, and American soldiers in the First World War, borrowed its characteristic shape with the wide brim directly from the medieval kettle hat. The reason was the same as in the Middle Ages – effective protection from shrapnel and fragments falling from above, in this case from exploding artillery shells.
Care and Maintenance Instructions
To ensure your helmet serves you well and retains its beauty for a long time, give it a little care. Steel is prone to rust, but with proper maintenance, it will look great for years to come.
- The helmet is shipped from the manufacturer with a protective layer of oil. Simply wipe it off with a dry cloth before first use.
- After each use, especially in a humid environment, dry the helmet thoroughly inside and out.
- Store it in a dry and ventilated place.
- From time to time, we recommend lightly coating the helmet with a preservative oil (e.g., Ballistol or WD-40) to prevent rust.
- The leather parts (liner and chin strap) can be treated with a leather care product to keep them supple and prevent cracking.
