Solid Brass Fitting "Nemean Lion Head", 4.6 x 4.4 cm

A Symbol of Mythical Strength

This casting isn't just any lion. It represents the Nemean Lion, whose golden fleece, according to myth, was invulnerable to mortal weapons. To wear its likeness on your gear symbolised strength, courage, and royal power. The fitting is cast in high relief with a detailed mane and a fierce expression. The golden shine of the brass gives the entire piece a luxurious and authentic appearance.

Easy Installation with a Split Pin

Attaching this fitting is very simple and doesn't require complicated tools. A long, split pin (also known as a brad) is attached to the back.

  1. Carefully mark the spot on your leather item (belt, bag, piece of armour) where you want to place the fitting.
  2. Use an awl or a drill to create a hole in the material.
  3. Push the pin on the back of the fitting through this hole.
  4. On the reverse side of the material, bend the two halves of the pin outward, away from each other (like a cotter pin or paper fastener).
  5. For maximum strength, you can lightly hammer the bent parts flat. Done!

Historical Context: The Nemean Lion

Slaying the Nemean Lion was the first of the twelve labours that the hero Herakles (known as Hercules in Rome) had to perform. Because the lion could not be killed with weapons, Herakles had to strangle it with his bare hands. He then made a cloak from its invulnerable hide and a helmet from its head, which became his iconic attributes. Lion heads were a popular motif in ancient art on armour, shields, and helmets, precisely as a symbol of invincible strength.

Care for Your Brass Fitting

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that naturally oxidises over time, acquiring a darker, antique patina. This is desirable for a historical look. However, if you prefer a shiny golden appearance, you can easily polish the fitting at any time with a soft cloth and a bit of metal polish.
