Set of Brass Wedge-Riveted Flat Rings, 8mm, 100 pcs
For the Dedicated Mail-Maker
This kit is intended for serious chainmail crafting. Unlike simply closing butted rings, riveting is a technique that ensures the rings will not open at the joint. In the package, you will find two separate components: a pile of flat rings (which are to be riveted) and a pile of sharp wedge rivets. Brass rings were often used in the Middle Ages for decorative borders on chainmail shirts or coifs, where they created a beautiful colour contrast against the steel rings.
How Does Wedge Riveting Work?
Wedge riveting is a specific technique that requires patience and the right tools. Unlike round rivets, this method uses triangular wedge rivets.
- The rings in this set are flat and have overlapping ends that are ready for riveting (usually with a pre-punched hole).
- To create the classic "4-in-1" weave, you will typically also need solid (stamped) rings (not included in this set), which alternate with these riveted rings.
- You weave the open ring through the solid rings and overlap its ends.
- You insert the wedge rivet into the hole and use special riveting pliers or a punch and a small anvil to peen the rivet. The wedge expands and securely fastens the two ends of the ring together.
This process creates an extremely strong join that is ready for real use in re-enactment or LARP.

Care and Maintenance
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc that naturally oxidises over time, acquiring a darker, antique patina. This is desirable for a historical look. However, if you prefer a shiny golden appearance, you can polish the rings or the finished armour at any time with a soft cloth and a bit of metal polish. Store the finished product in a dry place.
