The design of this gauntlet is based on historical mitten gauntlets. The four fingers are protected together under a wide, segmented cover, which increases resistance to heavy blows. The separately protected thumb allows for the free range of motion necessary for combat techniques with a sword, axe, or other weapon. The long cuff, formed from leather strips, protects your wrist. The entire gauntlet is secured with an adjustable strap and brass buckle, ensuring it stays firmly in place.

Mitten Gauntlets in History

Mitten gauntlets were very popular in the Middle Ages, particularly in the 14th and 15th centuries. Compared to finger gauntlets, they offered superior protection against crushing blows, as the force of an impact was distributed over a larger area and the fingers were shielded together. While heavily armoured knights wore steel versions, more lightly clad warriors, archers, or those who could not afford a full suit of armour often used durable leather variants, which were lighter and offered a better feel for the weapon.

Use and Safety Notice

This leather fencing gauntlet is designed for costume purposes, LARP, and light, choreographed reenactment combat. It provides good protection against strikes from wooden, foam, or other padded weapons. However, please note that this is not certified protective equipment. It is not suitable for full-contact combat, HEMA sparring with steel weapons, or activities such as buhurt, where serious injury could occur.
