Children's Chainmail Shirt "Little Knight", Galvanised Steel, 10 mm Rings
Authentic Look and Practical Design
The shirt is made of thousands of steel rings with an inner diameter of approx. 10 mm (0.4 inches), woven into the classic "4-in-1" pattern. This means each ring passes through four neighbouring ones, creating a flexible and durable mesh. The cut is designed to offer maximum freedom of movement for children. The haubergeon features short sleeves and reaches approximately to the mid-thigh (depending on the child's height).
A crucial feature is the slit at the neckline. Since chainmail is not elastic like a t-shirt, this slit makes pulling it over the head much easier. Once worn, the slit is closed using a leather lace (included in the package), adjusting the neckline so the shirt sits securely on the shoulders.
Historical Context: The Page's Journey
In medieval times, knights did not start their careers as adults. As young boys – pages – they learned court etiquette, horsemanship, and weapon handling. Later, as squires, they accompanied their knight into battle and carried his armour. Owning one's own mail shirt was a privilege. Chainmail (maille) was the primary protective element for a warrior throughout most of the Middle Ages before being supplemented or replaced by plate armour in later periods.
Material and Maintenance
A major advantage of this replica is the material. The steel rings are galvanised (zinc-plated). This zinc layer protects the steel from atmospheric moisture and rust. While historical armour had to be regularly polished in barrels with sand and oiled by knights (or their squires), this shirt requires minimal care.
- Rust Resistance: Thanks to galvanisation, it does not rust as easily as plain mild steel.
- Storage: Keep the armour in a dry place. If it gets wet, let it air dry naturally, do not place it on a heater.
- Cleaning: If dirty, simply wipe with a dry cloth.
Important Safety and Comfort Notice
Although the shirt is made of metal, it is a costume prop. It is not intended for full-contact combat (Buhurt) and does not provide certified protection against injury.
Comfort Tip: Chainmail has weight and can press on shoulders or chafe the skin. We strongly recommend wearing it over a thicker layer of clothing, ideally a padded tunic (gambeson). This significantly increases the comfort for the little warrior and makes the wearing experience much more enjoyable.
