This Scutum is not just an ordinary replica; it is the result of meticulous work by the ULFBERTH team, who focused on correcting the historical inaccuracies of commonly available models. In size, shape, and its distinct curvature, this shield faithfully matches findings from approximately 40–200 AD, the golden age of the Roman Empire. The deep red surface decorated with Jupiter’s wings and lightning bolts, combined with the massive boss, will immediately make you an unmistakable defender of the Empire's borders at any LARP or re-enactment event. Scutum Mars Ultimator – Monumental Roman Legionary Shield

Thanks to its robust construction and authentic craftsmanship, this shield is ideal for anyone looking for equipment that stays as close as possible to historical reality. It offers excellent body protection and allows for the practice of legendary formations, such as the tortoise (testudo).

Construction and Practical Details

The core of the shield is made of wood, providing the necessary strength while maintaining a manageable weight for single-handed use. The reverse side is reinforced with wooden slats to increase durability and prevent the surface from deforming. The dominant feature is the shield boss (umbo) and the protective edge trim, both made of tinned brass. This finish was intentionally chosen to closely mimic the appearance of original tinned bronze applications found in archaeological records.

In the centre of the shield, behind the boss, there is a horizontal handle integrated into the structure, allowing for a firm grip and effective deflection of enemy attacks. For practical reasons, the boss is attached with screws and round screw covers, making maintenance easier.

Historical Significance and Facts

The scutum was the cornerstone of Roman infantry tactics. Its curved shape was not accidental—it allowed a soldier to hide almost his entire body while deflecting strikes and missiles to the sides, minimising direct impact energy. Interestingly, the colours and motifs on the shields (like the wings and lightning bolts shown here) served as a "uniform" in the heat of battle, allowing officers and soldiers to instantly recognise which legion a man belonged to. This specific model represents the peak development of the scutum shield before it was replaced in later centuries by lighter round or oval shields.

Care and Safety

To ensure your shield leads you to victory in many battles, give it the following care:

  • Moisture Protection: The wooden base can warp in humid conditions. Always wipe the shield dry after use in the rain and do not store it in unventilated covers.
  • Brass Care: Tinned brass can oxidise over time. Use gentle metal cleaners on the boss to maintain its high shine.
  • Screw Check: Regularly check that the screws holding the boss are tight to prevent it from loosening during use.
  • Notice: This shield is not intended for full-contact combat (Buhurt) with steel weapons, as there is a risk of piercing the wood and causing injury. It is designed for re-enactment and LARP.

I recommend purchasing a Roman spear (pilum) and a Gladius-type sword with this shield to create the complete equipment of an authentic legionary.
