Pugio 'Exeter', roman dagger

The main weapon of the legionaries of Rome was the dagger known as the "Pugio", which was carried on the left side of the belt next to the thrusting sword (gladius). The Pugio has a broad, double-edged blade. This type of weapon was developed on the Iberian Peninsula around the 2nd century BC. From thereon, it became part of Roman military equipment. It was the successor to the Parazonium, and stayed in use until the 3rd century.
