Unlike thick and heavy gambesons, this doublet is designed to be lightweight, breathable, and non-restrictive, which you will appreciate during demanding reenactment, HEMA tournaments, or LARP events. Late Medieval Arming Doublet (Pourpoint) – Black / Red

Key Features and Construction

This doublet is made from heavy-duty cotton canvas, durable enough to withstand wear yet allowing your skin to breathe. A crucial feature is the inclusion of arming points (laces with brass aiglets/tips). You will find these on the shoulders and sleeves, designed for attaching pauldrons and couters.

The waist area is reinforced with a genuine leather strip featuring riveted eyelets. This is a critical structural detail – it allows you to securely lace your padded hose or plate leg harness directly to the doublet. This distributes the weight of the armour onto your hips rather than just your shoulders, significantly reducing fatigue during long wear.

Specifications:

  • Material: 100% Cotton (heavy canvas), leather fittings
  • Era: 15th Century (Late Medieval)
  • Fastening: Front lacing with metal tips
  • Purpose: Under-armour foundation, costume piece

History and Usage

Historically, the pourpoint evolved in response to the advancement of plate armour. Once steel plates covered most of the body, thick padding underneath became unnecessary; it would only restrict movement and cause overheating. The arming doublet served as the load-bearing "skeleton" for the armour.

Usage Tips:

  • Under Armour: Use it as your base layer. Tie your armour components directly to the provided points.
  • Standalone Wear: With its elegant, tailored fit and stand-up collar, the doublet looks great as civilian wear for camp life or light sparring practice (please note, however, that without armour, it does not provide significant protection against impact).

For the doublet to function correctly, fit is paramount. Please measure your chest carefully and consult the table below.

Care Instructions

As this doublet is made from natural cotton with leather components, it requires gentle care. We recommend hand washing or a gentle machine cycle (max 30°C) using a detergent suitable for coloured fabrics. Do not tumble dry, as this may damage the leather and shrink the cotton. Allow to air dry naturally on a hanger. The leather parts can be treated with leather conditioner occasionally.

Please note: The sword, hose/trousers, belt, and other accessories shown in the photos are not included.
