Medieval Doublet Bernhard with Braided Cords, black
Since the High Middle Ages, the close-fitting doublet has replaced the long and wide tunic. It was combined with trousers or leg warmers, which were attached directly to the doublet with laces.
The doublet is characterised by an adjustable waist, a close fit, a small stand-up collar and a laced or buttoned centre front. Originally, the doublet was worn as an undercoat with lacing. During the Renaissance, its neckline deepened and the doublet became more ornate.
A light shirt or undershirt was usually worn under the doublet.
There are a number of depictions of doublets of the late Middle Ages and Renaissance, for example in Codices Palatini germanici 466.
