Padded Steel Elbow Couters with Wings (1.6 mm)
Key Features and Design
Every detail of these couters has been engineered for maximum function and comfort in the heat of combat.
- Hybrid Construction: At the heart of each couter is an anatomically shaped plate of polished 1.6 mm (16 gauge) steel. This is securely riveted to a quilted textile base that acts as an effective shock absorber.
- Extended Protection: A large, asymmetrical wing provides crucial coverage for the sensitive inner elbow, an area frequently targeted in combat both with and without a shield.
- Integrated Padding: The breathable, quilted cotton lining is made from the same material as gambesons. This makes the couters comfortable enough to wear directly on the arm, with no extra arming garment strictly necessary underneath.
- Versatile Fastening: These couters offer two ways to wear them. Secure them directly to your arm using the robust leather strap and buckle, or tie them firmly to your gambeson or arming doublet using the eyelets around the padded border.
- Corrosion Resistance: The interior of the steel plate is painted black for enhanced durability against rust.

The Evolution of Joint Protection
Elbows and knees were among the first parts of the body to receive plate protection over mail in the 14th century. They were difficult to defend while maintaining mobility, making them frequent targets. The development of a large, protective wing on the inner arm, as seen on these couters, was a key 15th-century advancement that provided cover against devastating strikes to the undefended crook of the elbow.
Care for Your Armour
- Your couters will arrive lightly oiled for protection during shipping. Simply wipe the oil off with a dry cloth.
- After each use, wipe the steel parts dry and apply a thin coat of protective oil (like WD-40 or Ballistol).
- Keep the textile and leather parts dry to prevent mildew and material degradation.
