Loose Chainmail Rings Ø 6 mm / 18 gauge | Flat Ring, Dome Riveted (1 kg)

Why Choose 6 mm Diameter Rings?

Standard armor often uses 8 or 9 mm rings. This 6 mm type is significantly finer. This means:

  • More labor, but a better result: You will use more rings and time for the same surface area, but the resulting mesh is denser and harder for weapon points to penetrate.
  • Ideal for accessories: Excellent for making maille collars (bishop's mantle), helmet aventails, or gauntlets where greater flexibility and joint coverage are needed.
  • Authentic look: Flat rings combined with riveting look very period-accurate.

Construction and Material

The rings are made of mild steel and pressed into a flat profile. The ends of the rings are widened and stamped with a rivet hole. The connection is made using round rivets with a dome head (Dome Rivets), which are included in the package. This type of riveting provides a strong joint that withstands normal use in re-enactment or LARP.

Tips for the Armorer

Working with such small rings requires patience and precise tools. We recommend using quality riveting tongs adapted for dome rivets. Ensure that the rivet head is neat after compression and does not scratch anywhere – you will appreciate this especially if you wear the armor over thinner undergarments.

Maintenance and Warning

Since this is carbon steel without stainless treatment, the rings must be protected from moisture. The package is supplied in an oiled condition. Treat the finished armor regularly with preservation oil (e.g., WD-40, Ballistol, or gun oil). The product is suitable for costume purposes, LARP, and light historical fencing. For full-contact battles (Buhurt), we recommend consulting your organization's rules regarding minimum wire thickness and material type.
