Chainmail Coif, 10mm Butted Mild Steel Rings, Optional Finish: Zinc-Plated / Blackened

The Foundation for Your Perfect Historical Costume

Thanks to its universal cut with a square face opening and a generous mantle protecting the shoulders, this mail coif is ideal for portraying a wide range of historical and fantasy characters:

  • Viking and Norman warriors
  • Knights from the Crusader era
  • Medieval infantry, archers, and mercenaries
  • Fantasy characters like dwarves, elven warriors, or elite guards

This is an affordable and visually impressive base for your costume for LARP, historical fencing, medieval festivals, or for theatre and film purposes. For maximum comfort and functionality, we recommend always wearing the chainmail coif over a padded arming cap, which cushions blows and prevents chafing.

An Indispensable Part of Armour in History

From the 10th to the 14th century, the chainmail coif was the most widespread form of head protection throughout Europe. It was standard equipment for virtually every combatant, from common soldiers to the highest nobility. Knights often wore a great helm or other enclosed helmet over it for maximum protection in the heat of battle. Its design was so effective and reliable that it remained almost unchanged for centuries.

A Historical Tidbit

On the famous Bayeux Tapestry, which vividly depicts the Norman conquest of England in 1066, we can see dozens of warriors in chainmail armour. Some scenes show soldiers taking off their coifs in detail, giving us an excellent idea of how they were worn and how effectively they protected the head, neck, and shoulders.

Which Finish Should You Choose?

Choose the option that best suits your needs and the character you portray.

Zinc-Plated Version (Shiny)

The shiny zinc finish is a modern treatment that perfectly mimics the appearance of polished steel. Its greatest advantage is its excellent corrosion resistance and minimal maintenance requirements. It is the ideal choice for those who want a hassle-free and always great-looking piece of armour.

Blackened Version (Dark)

Blackening is a historical surface treatment method that gives steel a dark, matte finish. This version does not reflect light, helps with camouflage, and has a more rugged appearance. It's perfect for characters like rangers, assassins, or anyone who prefers a less conspicuous look.

Product Care and Important Notices

Proper care will ensure a long life for your armour. For the zinc-plated version, simply keep the coif dry and wipe it with a dry cloth if necessary. Oiling is not required. The blackened version, on the other hand, is more prone to rust. After each use, wipe it thoroughly dry and apply a thin layer of preservative oil (e.g., WD-40). Always store it in a dry place. Please note that the blackened surface may initially stain the garment underneath.

Important: As this coif is made from butted rings, it is not a protective piece of armour suitable for full-contact combat such as buhurt, Battle of the Nations, etc. It is a costume accessory. This is a "Class C according to the HEMA weapon classification, product without warranty!".
