Looking for light, flexible, yet resilient head protection? This short chainmail coif is the answer. Short Chainmail Coif, 9 mm Butted Hardened Steel Rings, V-Face

A Lighter, More Agile Warrior's Protection

Thanks to its shorter cut, which covers the head and neck but only slightly extends onto the shoulders, this coif is significantly lighter than its full-sized counterparts. This makes it a perfect choice for archers, light infantry, raiders, or any character in LARP or reenactment who needs to stay mobile. The reduced weight and greater freedom of neck movement will allow you to react faster in battle.

The Strength of Hardened Steel in a Butted Weave

Although the rings are butted (non-riveted), the use of hardened spring steel elevates their protective qualities to a much higher level. Unlike mild steel:

  • It is much stronger: The rings will not be pulled open as easily upon impact.
  • It is more resilient: After an impact, the steel tends to spring back to its original shape, increasing the armour's longevity.
  • It offers better protection: This is the best possible protection in the category of butted mail, representing an excellent compromise between price, weight, and safety.

A History of Shorter Coifs

While knights and heavy cavalry could afford full chainmail coifs with long drapes, many other soldiers opted for more practical and cheaper alternatives. Short coifs, often just protecting the skull and neck, were common. They provided essential protection against cuts without restricting movement or being a great burden on long marches. This coif is a modern interpretation of that practical approach.

A Point of Historical Interest: The Importance of Layering

No chainmail coif was ever worn directly on the head. A padded arming cap worn underneath was always a crucial component. It not only made wearing the mail more comfortable but, more importantly, it absorbed the kinetic energy of blows. A blunt sword strike might not cut the rings, but without a padded layer, it could easily cause a fracture. Remember, armour is always a system of layers!

Caring for Your New Coif

Hardened steel is an excellent material, but it still requires care to prevent rust.

  • Keep it Dry: After each use, especially in damp conditions, dry the coif thoroughly.
  • Oiling: Periodically apply a light coat of conservation oil. Wipe off any excess with a cloth to avoid staining your garments.
  • Storage: Store it in a dry, ventilated place.
