US Paratrooper Cricket – Authentic D-Day Signalling Device 1944

Appearance and Function

The cricket is a simple but robust device that perfectly serves its purpose. It consists of two basic parts: an outer casing of polished brass and a flexible spring steel plate secured inside. By pressing the brass casing against the steel plate, a characteristic, sharp, and relatively loud clicking sound is produced, which resembles the chirp of a cricket. The front is stamped with the inscription "U.S." and at the top, there is a hole for a cord, allowing for secure attachment to gear.

The History: A D-Day Communication Tool

The planners of D-Day gave the American paratroopers a particularly difficult task: to jump in the dark shortly after midnight into Nazi-occupied territory and secure key bridges and intersections before German counterattacks could reach the landing forces on the beach. Dispersed by variable winds and pilot navigation, the men landed in complete darkness, often far from their unit. How were they supposed to identify each other in such chaos?

General Maxwell Taylor, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, came up with a brilliantly simple solution. Every soldier was issued one of these small crickets. The system was simple and effective:

  • If a soldier heard a sound, he would give one click in response.
  • If the other person replied with two clicks, it was certain that they were a friend.

This quiet, reliable, and clear form of communication helped thousands of soldiers find their unit in the dark of night, turning chaos into an organized force.

Use and Maintenance

This replica is ideal for reenactment, collecting, themed displays, or as a stylish accessory to a historical uniform. It also makes for an original and interesting gift for military history enthusiasts.

How to care for the product:

  • Cleaning: Clean both the brass surface and the steel plate with a dry, soft cloth.
  • Storage: Store the cricket in a dry place to prevent the oxidation of the brass and potential corrosion of the steel plate.
  • Brass Care: If necessary, you can polish the brass surface with a special brass cleaner to restore its lustre.

This is a collector's item and is not intended for rough handling or as a toy for children.
