Forged Iron Trammel Hook / Kettle Saw
How the Trammel Hook Works
This tool consists of two interlocking forged parts. Its use is intuitive and effective:
- Hang the top loop of the hook from your campfire tripod or a crossbar over your hearth.
- Attach the handle (bail) of your cauldron, kettle, or grill grate to the bottom hook.
- To change the height, simply lift the main toothed arm slightly to disengage the catch.
- Slide the arm up or down to the desired height and let the catch lock into a new tooth.
This way, you can instantly regulate your cooking temperature—lower for high heat and boiling, higher for low heat and simmering. It's essentially the medieval thermostat for your field kitchen.
Historical Roots
Trammel hooks were a common feature in kitchens and encampments throughout the Middle Ages. We find depictions of them in period illuminations, and archaeological finds confirm their widespread use across Europe. They were a key technology that allowed cooks to prepare more complex dishes requiring different levels of heat. Owning such a hook adds not only functionality but also a high degree of period accuracy to your historical camp setup.
