Legendary American Military Carbon Steel Knife with Leather Sheath

The Birth of a Combat Legend

The story of this iconic knife began during the Second World War when the US Marine Corps (USMC) urgently sought a replacement for the inadequate and obsolete trench daggers from the First World War. The troops needed an absolutely versatile knife that would reliably serve not only as an effective close-quarters weapon but, more importantly, as a durable survival tool in the field. In 1942, a design by the Union Cutlery Co. was officially adopted, and the knife, introduced as the "USMC Mark 2 Combat Knife," immediately became the inseparable companion of Marines on the Pacific islands and battlefields in Europe. It handled absolutely everything—from digging foxholes to opening ration cans.

The Secret of the Famous Name

An interesting fact is the origin of the name by which this type of knife is globally known today. Legend tells of a thank-you letter from a fur trapper whose rifle jammed, forcing him to defend himself against a wounded bear using a knife made by the Union Cutlery company. From the shaky and barely legible handwriting, the company representatives could only decipher fragments of the letters "k a b a r", which they interpreted as a corruption of the English phrase "kill a bear". The manufacturer liked this gritty story and the resounding word so much that they registered it as a trademark in 1923, which later became an absolute synonym for this tactical design.

Construction, Materials, and Safe Usage

The heart of this weapon is the iconic, 170 mm / 6.7 in long clip-point blade, which is ideal for both slicing and piercing. It is forged from exceptionally tough 1095 high-carbon steel, which is easy to sharpen even in field conditions and is hardened to approximately 57 HRC. The blade features a protective black coating to prevent corrosion and eliminate unwanted reflections. A secure grip in any weather is guaranteed by the traditional handle made of compressed leather rings. Safety during demanding work, such as splitting wood (batoning) or food preparation, is ensured by a robust steel crossguard that prevents fingers from slipping onto the edge. The massive steel pommel at the end of the handle can serve as an improvised hammer. The knife is safely housed in a high-quality brown sheath made of genuine leather, proudly decorated with an embossed USMC insignia.

Important Safety Warning: The weapon features an extremely sharp edge. Although it is a military combat knife, for safety reasons, it is entirely unsuitable for historical stage fencing (HEMA, LARP combat) or any human-to-human contact combat during training. Always exercise maximum caution when handling it.

Maintenance Guide for Carbon Steel and Leather

For this collectible yet purely practical piece to serve you for generations, it requires proper care. The 1095 steel is not stainless. Although the black coating protects the flats of the blade, the cutting edge itself is exposed and highly susceptible to corrosion. After every use in the great outdoors, thoroughly clean and dry the knife, and preserve the blade with a thin layer of high-quality gun or mineral oil. Keep the handle and the leather sheath dry, and occasionally treat them with beeswax or leather conditioner so the natural material does not dry out and crack.
