History and Symbolism: The First Order of Castile
The dominant feature of the shield is the vivid red Cross of the Order of Calatrava. This order was the first military-religious order founded in Castile (in 1158) and the second to receive papal approval. Their emblem is a Greek cross with arms ending in stylized fleurs-de-lis. The red color on the silver (steel) background symbolizes the blood shed in defense of the faith.
The shape of the shield corresponds to late medieval equestrian shields, often called "heater shields." This specific design features a top edge with three points, a style favored for its elegance and functionality in heraldry.

Care Instructions
Maintenance is very easy. Use a soft duster to remove dust. A soft microfiber cloth is sufficient to restore the high gloss and remove fingerprints. Avoid using abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or harsh chemicals, as these could scratch the surface or damage the paint on the cross.
