Stainless Steel Heater Shield with Red Calatrava Cross
History and Symbolism: The First Order of Castile
The dominant feature of the shield is the vivid red Cross of the Order of Calatrava. This order was the first military-religious order founded in Castile (in 1158) and the second to receive papal approval. Their emblem is a Greek cross with arms ending in stylized fleurs-de-lis. The red color on the silver (steel) background symbolizes the blood shed in defense of the faith.
The shape of the shield corresponds to late medieval equestrian shields, often called "heater shields." This specific design features a top edge with three points, a style favored for its elegance and functionality in heraldry.
Installation and Usage
The shield is designed exclusively as a wall decoration. The back is painted black and equipped with a sturdy metal chain. Installation takes just a moment—simply hang it on a strong hook or nail. Thanks to the mirror-like finish of the steel and the golden brass rivets along the edge, it will immediately become the centerpiece of any room, whether it's your living room, hall, or study.
