Historical Background and Symbolism
The shape of this item corresponds to the classic heater shield, which became popular in Europe during the 13th century. Smaller and more manageable than the earlier kite shields, this design was favored by knights on horseback. The top edge features three slight points, giving it a distinctive, late-medieval silhouette.
The central motif is the red Cross Pattée. Pope Eugenius III granted this symbol to the Knights Templar in 1147 to be worn on their mantles and shields. The red color symbolized the blood shed for the faith and the willingness for martyrdom. This shield stands as a direct tribute to the legendary guardians of pilgrims in the Holy Land.
Usage and Installation
This shield is designed exclusively as a wall decoration. The back is painted black and equipped with a practical metal chain for hanging.
