The Symbolism of the Castilian Castle

The castle relief is no coincidence. It is a form of canting arms, which visually alludes to the name of its bearer – the Kingdom of Castile (Spanish: Reino de Castilla). The name "Castile" translates to "Land of Castles." In the Middle Ages, Castile was one of the most powerful Christian kingdoms on the Iberian Peninsula and played a key role in the reconquest of Spain, known as the Reconquista. The castle symbol is so significant that it remains one of the main components of the national coat of arms of modern Spain to this day.
