"Black" Wakizashi – Decorative Short Sword by Marto
Classic Design with Modern Durability
This replica respects the traditional look of samurai swords. The handle (tsuka) is lined with light faux ray skin, creating a striking contrast with the black cotton wrapping (tsuka-ito). The circular guard (tsuba) is made of metal with a black finish and decorated with relief motifs. A standout feature of this model is the scabbard (saya), which is made of aluminum with a black finish. This makes it extremely durable; unlike wood, it will not warp due to humidity, ensuring the sword always fits perfectly while looking identical to a traditional lacquered scabbard.
The blade is crafted from AISI 420 stainless steel. While this is a decorative steel, Marto has paid close attention to detail. The blade features a Hamon line, which, although mechanically created, faithfully replicates the look of traditional tempering. The blade comes with a factory edge and a sharp point.
Historical Context: The Indoor Sword
The Wakizashi (literally "side inserted sword") was more than just a backup weapon for the samurai. While the long katana had to be left at the entrance when visiting a home, the wakizashi remained at the warrior's belt (obi) even indoors. It was the "last line of defence" and a symbol of personal honour. Interestingly, while the katana was restricted to the samurai class, merchants and travellers were permitted to carry a wakizashi of a legal length for protection against bandits.
Usage and Safety Warning
Please bear in mind that this wakizashi is strictly a decorative item.
- Not for Combat: The stainless steel blade is hard but more brittle than high-carbon steel. Striking hard objects risks snapping the blade.
- Not for Cutting: The construction is not designed to absorb the shock of impact.
- Maintenance: Thanks to the stainless steel blade and aluminum scabbard, this sword requires minimal care. Simply wipe it occasionally with a dry cloth.
