Arabian Alfanje Scimitar – Gold Edition by Marto
Design and Historical Inspiration
The term "Alfanje" in Spanish refers to a type of single-edged cutting weapon with a curved blade, similar to a cutlass or scimitar. This specific model stands out for its highly decorative finish:
- Blade: Made of high-quality stainless steel and decorated with deep etching featuring floral motifs and arabesques, reminiscent of Damascus steel. A unique feature is the shape of the tip, which is notched or bifurcated – this element likely references the legendary sword Zulfiqar, often depicted in Islamic tradition with a split point.
- Hilt: The handle and crossguard are cast from Zamak alloy and finished with 24-karat gold plating. The guard is asymmetric – extending on one side into a knuckle bow to protect the fingers, and ending on the other side with a decorative quillon. The entire surface of the hilt is covered in detailed reliefs.
Usage and Display
This scimitar is a strictly decorative item. Its construction (tang inside the handle, materials) is not designed for cutting or fencing. It is a jewel meant to be hung on a wall where it will catch the light and draw the eye, or used as a luxury costume accessory for the role of a wealthy merchant, sultan, or vizier for theatre and LARP purposes (provided no combat is involved).

Care Instructions
To ensure the gold plating and the shine of the blade last as long as possible:
- Do not touch the blade with bare hands: Acids in sweat can leave marks on stainless steel that will tarnish over time. If you do touch it, wipe it immediately with a dry, soft cloth.
- Cleaning the gold plating: Clean the gold-plated parts only with a very soft feather duster or cloth. Do not use chemical metal cleaners or abrasive pastes, as these will wear away the thin layer of gold.
- Placement: Do not expose the sword to humid environments (bathrooms, basements) to prevent oxidation of the base materials.
Warning
Although the sword looks massive, it is a collector's artifact. Never use it to strike objects or for fencing. The steel is hardened for hardness, not flexibility, and upon impact, the blade could break or snap out of the handle, potentially causing injury.
