Nordic Skeggöx Bearded High Carbon Steel Axe for Warriors

Historical Context and Practical Application

This weapon is deeply rooted in the Scandinavian traditions of the early Middle Ages. Typologically, the product closely corresponds to Type C of the Petersen typology for Viking weapons. The prominent beard (the downward elongated part of the blade) served a dual purpose in history: it reduced the overall weight of the axe head while maintaining a long cutting edge, and it allowed the warrior to hook the rim of an enemy shield and pull it out of a defensive position. Conversely, the upper tip of the blade is slightly swept upwards, which was historically used for surprising thrusting attacks. Today, this excellent piece serves primarily for historical craft demonstrations, collection purposes, or professional cutting tests.

Safety Guidelines and Proper Maintenance

Important Warning: The product is supplied from the factory with an extremely sharp blade. For safety reasons, this weapon is therefore completely unsuitable for contact fencing, HEMA sparring, buhurt, or any man-to-man combat. Using it for combat training is purely at your own risk, as there is a significant danger of fatal injury. Never strike the product against hard materials such as stone or modern steel, as this will permanently damage the blade.

To ensure the axe serves you long and reliably, it requires regular care. The axe head is made of high carbon steel, which has excellent cutting properties but is susceptible to humidity and rust. After every use, even after just touching it with a bare hand, the blade must be wiped dry and treated with a thin layer of quality gun oil. We recommend occasionally treating the wooden handle with linseed oil or beeswax to prevent it from drying out and cracking.
