Richard the Lionheart Shield Shaped Sword Wall Display Plaque

Usage and Installation

This plaque is primarily designed for hanging a single sword vertically on a wall. On the back of the shield, you will find two metal eye hooks used to securely anchor the plaque to the wall using suitable wall plugs and screws (not included). Directly in the centre of the back, there is an adjustable metal clamp. Simply loosen the screws on the clamp, slide the blade of your sword securely into it, and adjust as necessary. The hilt or crossguard of the sword will naturally rest against the top edge of the clamp, keeping the weapon firmly in place while perfectly aligning with the front of the shield.

Historical Context and Symbolism

The design of this plaque draws heavily from rich English heraldry and the era of the Crusades. The white background with a red cross is traditionally known as Saint George's Cross, the patron saint of England. The three walking lions (referred to in heraldry as leo passant guardant) are the unmistakable symbol of English kings, systematically adopted by King Richard I (the Lionheart) at the end of the 12th century. This historic combination makes the plaque not just a practical holder, but a beautiful period-style accessory reflecting the heroic knightly epics of the Third Crusade.

Care and Maintenance

To ensure your plaque serves you as long as possible and maintains its flawless appearance, we recommend regularly dusting it with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners or excessive moisture, which could damage the varnished plywood surface or cause unwanted oxidation on the patinated brass applications. When inserting or removing the sword from the clamp, proceed carefully so you do not accidentally scratch the painted edges of the shield with the blade.

Important Safety Warnings

Always make sure that the wall plugs and screws you use are sufficiently rated to hold not only the weight of the plaque itself but, more importantly, the weight of the suspended sword. Never hang excessively heavy swords (e.g., massive two-handed swords) on this plaque unless you are absolutely certain of the wall's load-bearing capacity. For safety reasons, never allow children to reach for or pull on the suspended sword, as this could dislodge the entire assembly and cause serious injury. This product is primarily intended for decorative and lighter swords.

Recommended Accessories

We highly recommend purchasing a decorative replica of a medieval one-handed sword from our extensive range to go with this plaque, creating a perfectly matched set for your study or living room.
