Historical Inspiration and Legacy

This helmet is inspired by historical originals from the turn of the 16th to the 17th century, spanning the climax of the Sengoku period and the early Edo period. This specific model is crafted in honor of Katakura Kagetsuna (1557–1615), also widely known as Katakura Kojūrō. Kagetsuna was the senior strategist, master retainer, and trusted right-hand commander to the famous warlord Date Masamune. Renowned for his tactical brilliance and unwavering loyalty, Kagetsuna led the Date clan's dark-armoured forces to victory in numerous historic clashes.

Craftsmanship and Key Features

The core of the helm is a matte black lacquered steel bowl (Suji-bachi style) featuring vertical ridges. At top front sits a dramatic gilded Maedate crest shaped as an asymmetrical crescent moon (Mikazuki). The wearer's face is protected by a black Mempo mask featuring a light bristle mustache, an orange padded throat roll, and an attached neck guard (yodare-kake). A multi-tiered shikoro neck guard is bound with multi-colored braided lacing, while the crown is capped with a gilded Teppen-no-kanamono and the back is decorated with a black Agemaki knot and tassel.

Usage and Fitting Recommendations

Designed for both display on the included wooden stand and for wearing, this kabuto fastens under the chin using woven cords, while the Mempo mask secures independently. Please note that this helmet is not protective armour suitable for full-contact combat such as Buhurt, Battle of the Nations, or heavy sparring. For reenactment, theatrical use, or LARP, we recommend wearing a suitable padded arming cap underneath to provide cushioning and ensure a secure, comfortable fit on your head.

Historical Trivia

The crescent moon front crest (Mikazuki Maedate) was one of the most recognizable icons on Japanese battlefields. While a full moon signified completion, the crescent moon symbolized continuous growth, renewal, and hope. Its distinctive asymmetrical design also served a functional purpose: it allowed the samurai to swing their sword overhead without snagging the weapon on their helmet crest.
