Large Medieval Forged Padlock with Two Keys

Use in Modern Homes and at Historical Events

This padlock is more than just a prop. You can use it functionally to secure the gate to your cottage, a barn door, a wine cellar, or a massive wooden door. It's also perfect for locking a large wooden chest that doubles as a coffee table in your living room. As a decorative piece on a wall or hanging from antique furniture, it becomes an undeniable focal point that will capture every guest's attention. For history and fantasy enthusiasts, it's the ideal hardware to lock a dungeon, shackle a prisoner, or guard a pirate's treasure.

A Glimpse into History

While known since Roman times, padlocks saw a huge surge in popularity during the Middle Ages. Their main advantage was portability, as they didn't have to be permanently fixed to a single door. Historical sources show that similar robust locks were widely used to secure valuable cargo and mail transported on horseback and, later, by rail. Their massive construction was intended to deter thieves at first glance.

Special Feature: The Two-Key System

The mechanism with two keyholes, as seen on this lock, was not a mere whim. It was a primitive but effective form of security. One key would move the internal bolt into the locked position, while the second, often differently shaped, was required to release it. Some ancient locks even featured false keyholes designed to mislead and delay thieves.

Instructions for Use and Care

Using the lock is simple. Pass the massive shackle through the hasp or chain. Use one of the keys in its corresponding keyhole and turn it to lock the device. To unlock it, use the second key in the other keyhole. The padlock is made from steel, which naturally reacts to moisture. It is treated with a protective oil from the factory. After unpacking, simply wipe off any excess oil with a dry cloth or paper towel. To maintain its beautiful appearance and functionality, we recommend storing the lock in a dry place and occasionally wiping it down with a light mineral or gun oil, especially if it will be exposed to the elements.

What You Should Know

This padlock is a historical replica. While fully functional, its security standards are not equivalent to modern, certified locks. We, therefore, do not recommend using it to secure highly valuable property against professional thieves. It is a stylish security solution, not a high-security one. Do not expose the lock to constant rain and humidity without regular maintenance to prevent rust.
