A Sliding Door Bolt with a Large Handle

The mechanism consists of a strong horizontal bolt running through two fixed guide loops upon an elongated mounting plate. A large teardrop-shaped handle at the end allows you to slide the bolt smoothly into its keeper or draw it back again. A smaller vertical operating peg in the centre provides another convenient grip where space around the main handle is restricted.

The separate keeper plate is fitted to the door frame, a post or the second leaf of a gate. Once the bolt has entered the keeper, it prevents the door from opening in one direction. It is a practical everyday closure for garden and agricultural buildings, but it does not replace a certified security lock.

Rustic Historic Revival Inspired by Medieval Ironwork

The design reflects a rustic historic revival style inspired by medieval and early modern architectural ironwork. The raised, curled ends of the mounting plates imitate decorative forms that historical blacksmiths produced by splitting, drawing out and scrolling heated metal.

The basic sliding-bolt principle is considerably older and was already known in antiquity. During the Middle Ages, simple door bolts were widely used upon gates, agricultural buildings, chests and window shutters. They remained common throughout the 16th–19th centuries because they were reliable, easy to operate and required no complicated lock case.

This product is not an exact reproduction of one particular surviving original. It is modern functional ironmongery with a traditional blacksmith-made appearance. Its decorative character also recalls 19th-century Medieval Revival, Gothic Revival and Arts and Crafts design.

Material and Finish

The door bolt is made from hand-worked structural steel. Its individual parts are shaped and joined to resemble traditional blacksmith-made architectural fittings. Small irregularities, working marks and slight differences in surface texture are natural features of its rustic appearance rather than defects.

The blackened finish provides basic protection against corrosion. For exterior use, we recommend installing the bolt in a position sheltered from direct rain and maintaining the surface periodically with oil or a suitable metal wax.

Technical Specifications

How to Install the Door Bolt

Fit the mounting plate with the moving bolt to the door leaf or movable section of the gate. The keeper belongs upon the frame, post or second gate leaf. Both components must sit at the same height so that the bolt enters the keeper freely and without binding.

• Hold the door bolt in the chosen position and check that the handle has enough room to move.
• Align the keeper so that the bolt enters it straight and to a sufficient depth.
• Mark the centre of every mounting hole with a pencil.
• Drill narrow pilot holes in hard or thoroughly seasoned timber.
• Attach both components loosely and test the complete movement of the bolt.
• Once correctly aligned, tighten all screws securely.

The supplied screws may not suit every timber thickness or expected load. For a heavy gate, use longer structural screws of a suitable diameter. Before drilling, make certain that no electrical cables or other services run through the mounting area.

Care and Safe Use

• Remove dust and ordinary dirt with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
• Dry the steel thoroughly after contact with water.
• Apply a small amount of light oil to the bolt and guide loops occasionally.
• For exterior use, renew the protective oil or wax coating regularly.
• Do not use aggressive cleaners, wire wool or coarse abrasives.
• Never force the bolt when the door has dropped or the keeper is misaligned.
• Keep your fingers clear of the space between the bolt and keeper while closing it.
• Do not use the large handle as a step, tethering point or support for heavy loads.
• Inspect the mounting screws and surrounding timber regularly.

Recommended Accessories

For coordinated period-style doors, combine the bolt with black strap hinges, decorative nails, a ring knocker, door pull or an additional steel door bolt. Ironmongery inspired by the 14th–19th centuries works particularly well upon gates, wickets and cottage doors. For paired gates, a separate vertical drop bolt may be added to secure the inactive leaf.
