English Civil War Lobster Pot Helmet: Ironside Cavalry Armour – 17th Century

Iconic "Ironside" Design

This helmet, historically known as a Zischägge or colloquially as the "Lobster Pot," is crafted from 18 gauge mild steel (approx. 1.2 mm). Its nickname comes from the distinctive articulated neck guard at the back, resembling a lobster's tail, which provides excellent neck protection while allowing full head movement.

The face is guarded by a fixed peak with three protective steel bars welded to it. This design was favoured by harquebusiers and cuirassiers because it offered substantial defense against sword cuts without compromising breathing or visibility—crucial factors in the heat of battle. The hinged cheek plates feature auditory holes, ensuring you can still hear commands amidst the clash of steel.

Comfort and Fit

To ensure the helmet remains comfortable during long days at a reenactment or LARP event, it comes fitted with a high-quality buff leather liner. This liner acts as a shock absorber and provides a secure fit. A sturdy leather chin strap with a buckle keeps the helmet firmly in place, even during active movement. With an inner circumference of approximately 26.7 inches (68 cm), it fits most adult heads comfortably.

Historical Context

Originating from Eastern European and Ottoman designs, this helmet style swept across Europe during the Thirty Years' War and became the standard issue for British heavy cavalry during the Civil Wars (1642–1651). It represents the evolution of warfare where firearms were common, but the sword was still the deciding factor in close quarters.

Care Instructions

To keep your armour in prime condition:

  • Rust Prevention: Mild steel will rust if neglected. Wipe the helmet dry after use and apply a light coat of oil (such as WD-40 or 3-in-One oil).
  • Leather Care: Treat the leather liner and strap occasionally with beeswax or leather conditioner to prevent cracking.
  • Storage: Store in a dry environment.

Safety Warning: This helmet is classified as a Class C weapon/armour replica. While made of steel, the 18 gauge thickness is designed for LARP, stage combat, and costume use. It is not suitable for full-contact heavy combat (like Bohurt or Battle of the Nations), where heavy steel weapon strikes could deform the metal and cause injury.
