13th Century Padded Arming Cap for Helmets
A Key Component of Your Armour
This padded cap, historically known as a coif or arming hood, is crafted from two layers of durable cotton canvas. Between them lie several layers of padding made from recycled textile fibres, which effectively absorb the energy from blows. The vertical quilting ensures the filling stays in place, maintaining its shape even during rigorous use.
The cap is designed to comfortably cover the entire skull, ears, and the nape of the neck. With two integrated ties, it can be fastened securely under the chin. Thanks to the use of natural materials, the cap is breathable and comfortable even during extended wear.
Available in: Brown, Natural, Black.
Historical Context and Use
Who Wore It and When?
From the High Middle Ages to the Renaissance, the padded arming cap was a completely standard part of nearly every combatant's equipment. It was worn by knights, foot soldiers, and archers alike. It served as the fundamental layer under any helmet – be it a mail coif, a Norman helmet, a great helm, or a later sallet.
Interesting Fact: Why Isn't a Helmet Enough?
While a metal helmet will stop a sword's edge, the kinetic energy of the blow is still transferred. Without a padded layer, even a deflected blow could cause a serious injury, such as a concussion. The padded cap's job was to absorb and distribute this energy, protecting the warrior's head from blunt force trauma.
What Occasions Is It Suitable For Today?
This arming cap is ideal for:
- Historical fencing and reenactment
- LARP and fantasy events

- The SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) and similar groups
Product Care

- Washing: We recommend gentle hand washing in cold water.
